More medals could be on the cards for the Auburn University student if she is called upon to represent Kenya in Friday’s team events
Tennis star Angella Okutoyi, on the day she broke Kenya’s 46-year spell without an African Games tennis singles medal to win gold, left the TC Tennis Complex in Accra, Ghana with another medal strapped around her neck.
This time, it was a women’s doubles silver medal, which she, alongside her teammate Cynthia Cheruto, claimed at the back end of a 6-4, 7(10) - 6(3) loss to Egyptian pair Sandra Sameh Samir and Merna Mostafa Refaat in Thursday's final.

The feat meant another piece of history, as the duo became the first to win an African Games doubles medal since Susan Wakhungu and Jane Davies-Doxzon won gold at the 1978 event in Algiers, Algeria.
Okutoyi and Cheruto on their way to the final had beaten all of Ethiopia, Zambia and Egypt in straight sets, before out-dueling Sierra Leone in three to book a slot in the semifinals where they received a bye after Egypt’s Mayar Sherif and Lamis Elhussein issued a walkover.
More medals could be on the cards for the Auburn University student if she is called upon to represent Kenya in Friday’s team events.
Kenya is set to face Nigeria from 1300 EAT in the competition that will involve two singles and a doubles match.
With four players available in Kenya’s team, two selected by the head coach will compete for a slot in Saturday’s final.
